Connected Landscapes

CONSERVATION & RESTORATION

“Our ultimate vision is that future generations can experience vast connected landscapes in all their full beauty, where all species can be preserved in healthy numbers and spread across a productive food landscape for both people and animals.

After centuries of human intervention, our nature has become fragmented and constrained.

Sometimes it is wise to let natural processes run their course again… to remain open-minded and no longer force nature in a particular direction.

To accept that nature makes its own decisions in all its complexity.

The Elzéard Foundation does this in carefully chosen, specific places in our landscape and contributes to climate resilience by giving the ecosystem’s self-regulating functions a helping hand.

  • Preserve and strengthen the characteristic cultural landscape

  • Space for natural processes within a productive landscape

  • A diverse landscape in which species can move, populations can recover, and adapt to climate change

With an integrated vision based on regional history, biodiversity and climate, heritage, and agriculture

Regenerative production

HEALTHY PROCESSES AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, AGRICULTURE AND NATURE

Farm Elzéard is a testing center for developing business models in agriculture that produce food and other resources while regenerating nature and landscape.

We promote local, circular, and economically viable agriculture based on a holistic ecosystem approach to develop a resilient and climate-resistant food landscape.

We do this by launching our own projects and seeking collaboration with farmers and other actors in the region. Agroforestry is one of our key focus areas.

“Regeneration is the greatest source of value in the 21st century.”

When recreating living landscapes and developing regenerative agricultural zones, a holistic approach is followed, with biodiversity, climate, local history, and heritage at its core.

Living fields

Fields with a wide variety of cereals and industrial crops, wild plants, insects, micro-organisms, and other organisms together create a resilient and ecologically balanced agricultural system.

Pépinière Elzéard – Ecological heritage nursery –

Native plants are a source of restoration for landscapes and their natural inhabitants. Through their genetic adaptation to the local environment, they play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and a resilient ecosystem.

Status spring 2026

  • 180.000+ plants in propagation

  • Living gene bank with 110+ species

  • 10,000 m of bocage elements planted

  • 472 high-stem fruit trees planted

  • 15 new orchards

Along slow routes

The Three Border Region is well known and popular for day trips and short stays. However, the current landscape is in poor condition, with a loss of heritage features, natural remnants, and ecological connections.

Elzéard, together with partners and public authorities, actively works to strengthen the ecological coherence of the landscape. Through the Full Nature Trails® initiative, an essential corridor and lifeline for both people and the more-than-human world is being brought back to life.

Old, forgotten walking paths are rediscovered and linked to existing networks, while natural and landscape elements are carefully integrated. This creates a fluid interaction between nature and experience, in which biodiversity flourishes and the beauty of the landscape becomes visible and tangible again.
